Dynastar Trouble Maker Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Trouble Maker Skis 2008/09

Hugely popular in the past, and that was without the sexy graphic on the base of the ski. The new Trouble Maker is sure to increase its attractiveness not only to the park and pipe skier but to the all-mountain free-skier. The Trouble Maker has always been a popular ski with all-mountain skiers and many a saisonaire. With 81 mm under your hoof you can stomp landings in the park, tear around on-piste, rip through the bumps and generally just chill and enjoy your freeskiing no matter where your skiing takes you.

Citizen Ski rating: 95/100

Fantastic new generation of freeskis that can just about do it all - plus a sexy brunette on the base does no harm.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar Trouble Maker Skis 2008/09:

Excellent control: Lightweight, freestyle sidecuts
Impressive jump performance: Extremely responsive,
great pop effect during take-off, performance and
good edge grip on hardpack: Half Pipe

The ultimate Legend in terms of all-mountain versatility, well if you prefer an edge towards powder skiing. Dynastar Legend Pro Rider XXL Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider XXL Skis 2008/09

Big, powerful bruisers in the "old-skool" sense of freeride. The Pro XXL is definitely a ski aimed at the confirmed freeride expert to pro level skier. Minimal side-cut, race-bred and race-factory manufactured for high-speed control, stability in the crud and on icy, steep pistes. The XXl is your ski for hard-core back-country freeride. Rock solid construction and rock solid durability and performance.

Citizen Ski rating: 90/100

A high score for a ski that personally is not one of my personal favourites, but the Pro XXL is certainly one of the toughest and most focused performers in freeride - I guess I prefer the Huge Trouble sense of fun a little more.

Dynastar Legend 8000 Fluid Skis 2009

Dynastar Legend 8000 Fluid Skis 2009

Hugely popular in the French Alps the Legend 8000's are great all-rounders for the advanced to expert skier- they do everything reasonably well and are pretty easy to use. They are a touch boring though. The Legend 8000's are one of the more versatile skis out there; but perhaps like most things that try to achieve too much over too much ground, they can end up feeling a little thin or uninspiring.

In the perfect world you would buy a really great on-piste ski for zipping around when the snow is hard and flat plus a second pair- such as Dynastars Big Troubles, for when the snow is deep.

Unfortunately the world is less than perfect and most of us can't take a quiver of skis with us for varying conditions. So the Legend 8000 is well-placed, if not one of the best skis, that can take virtually any skier to any place on the hill, including serious off-piste/back-country without complaint.

Citizen Ski rating: 90/100 for versatility and for being a fine all-rounder. A lot less out of 100 for the aesthetics.

In the perfect world you would buy a really great on-piste ski for zipping around when the snow is hard and flat plus a second pair- such Dynastars Big Troubles for when the snow is more profound than a rather deep cavern with a bard (a poet in the traditional English sense) sat reciting in its depths.
Unfortunately the world is less than perfect so the Legend 8000 will retain its place as a good all-round freeride ski but not an inspirational great.

Dynastar Legend 4800 Fluid Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Legend 4800 Fluid Skis 2008/09

Advanced skiers always love the, almost, perennial Legend 4800. But this year the dimensions are boosted to 79 mm underfoot so expert skiers looking for a versatile freeskiing ski will enjoy the Dynastar's qualities. An easy turn-in, lightweight, although beefier and more substantial than the outgoing model, plus Autodrive plate to give good on-piste performance for a most accessible and versatile ski.

A fuller, more mature ski with a greater level of depth than the original 4800, the Fluid 4800 is very comfortable in pretty much all-conditions and all terrain for the advanced recreational skier.

As ever with Dynastar they produce a very attractive and super-smooth ski. With an executive-aesthetic and a construction tailored to the all-mountain cruiser the Contact 4x4 is a lovely all-rounder for the skier looking for sleek design and a versatile, refined ride. Dynastar were originators of the "polyvalent" ski with the original 4x4's, but this product is another league. The latest Autodrive plate and a wood-core that is light, durable and precise all combine for a lovely ski that wil more than fit the bill for the non-aggressive expert or sporty advanced skier looking for one ski that can almost do it all - with the exception of deep powder.

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider Skis 2008/09

Revised and revitalised for 2009, the Legend Pro Rider ski is built for the dedicated freeride expert, or even Pro rider. Firmer, smoother and more invigorating than the previous somewhat soporific model. The float is increased with the addition of an extra 3 mm underfoot, the lengths - there are 3 models available - are a touch shorter and whilst it may seem more manageable I think the overall effect is producing a large freeride ski that remains dynamic.

Certainly a ski for the most proficient of skiers, the radius is 21 m +, so if you love a GS ski then you'll enjoy the Pro Rider in the deep and tough, advanced skiers need not apply. Solid wood-core and sidewall construction keeps 'em beefy and easy to repair so durability shouldn't be an issue. A firm ride and understated image, which you may like and I can take or leave - but as a ski they are feisty beasts.

Dynastar Contact 8 Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Contact 8 Skis 2008/09

Very pleasant all-run cruisers. If you are an intermediate to advanced skier looking for a classic all-mountain ski that is happy on any colour of run then the Contact 8 is happy to oblige. With a wide tip the '8 swoons into its arcs rather than dives, it is a relaxed ski, easy to ride and without any nasty bites lurking within its soul for when the going gets tough. The Contact 8 is as friendly a piste carver as you could want, if it was canine it would be blonde and hail from that northern Canadian province that spawned the famed four-legged progeny.

Intermediates will enjoy how they can progress rapidly with the Contact 8, the blend of forgiving but sporty flex, a large, carve-orientated side-cut and reasonable platform all amount to a ski that is without fault for its target user. More advanced skiers may want to move up the range somewhat, but if you love cruising blues and reds, perhaps with the odd difficult run thrown in during a week then give the Contact 8 a go.

Gorgeous and funky park and pipe fun for the neo-new-school or post-new-school skier. A feminine but very strong graphic should see the 'Trouble reach a broad market this winter, it really does look very good. Dynastar Altitrail Vertical Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Altitrail Vertical Skis 2008/09

Versatile all-mountain touring skis. Favoured by many a ski tourer who looks as if they would rather catch a chair-lift than wash. Perhaps a little unjust but the Vertical is a quintessential touring ski - and that sport does attract some seriously happiness-retarded i.e grumpy looking folk. Certainly in my skiing back-yard the ski tourers smell less attractive than the average marmot, appear to have shaved, whether male or female, with less frequency (than the average marmot) and ski much worse (than the average marmot). Oh and make lots of noise, mostly unfathomable to anything other than....you guessed it, a fellow touring marmot.

But the ski is fine. It is just that some of the people you are likely to encounter when using this ski will drive you to the nearest lift and have you grasping for a pair of Bode Miller's downhill skis.

Think of an abacus, then think of the Blackberry. The average user of ski touring skis in the western Alps seems to be wondering, with all the perplexity of one of Kubric's primates in 2001, what the hell is an abacus!

Alas for those of you who do wash, shave (male or female) and are familiar with an iPod or Blackberry, then the Altitrail Vertical is a very good, well built and versatile touring ski - just don't sport a deer stalker hat and inane grin the next time you ski with a pair.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar Altitrail Vertical Skis 2008/09:

All the skis in the Alti range are built around
the same philosophy: uphill performance without compromising on
downhill skiability. Recreational and professional skiers alike will
find a product adapted to their level within this range.
The Alti Powder was created in line with this philosophy. As the first

Dynastar Exclusive Course Pro Womens Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Exclusive Course Pro Womens Skis 2008/09

A real race ski purely for women. With individual graphics, a tailored balance spot for women and a full-on race plate the Course Pro is a seriously quick and technical pair of skis for women who know how to drive a long radius turn.

It is great to see that Dynastar have made this race ski exclusively for women - it must be tiring for good women skiers to use the same as men all the time, as it is tiring for those of us in skiing to use race skis that always look like a race ski all the time.......manufacturers take note, we want funky race skis not just boring "go faster" graphics all the time, wake up and give us something fresh!

In the 178 length the Exclusive Course Pro gives a 21 metre radius turn, that is the old FIS length rule for GS and it is very quick and very direct. You need your wits about you and good technique to get the most out of this style of ski - jibbers you will have a shock!

Fantastic edge-hold on very hard snow, great rebound and pure high-speed thrills.

Citizen Ski rating: 99/100

Superb race-orientated ski for the expert female skier who loves a dash of speed.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar Exclusive Course Pro Womens Skis 2008/09:

Dynastar D-Stinct Limited Skis 2008/09

Dynastar D-Stinct Limited Skis 2008/09

The D-Stinct Limited is the most versatile and performance orientated ski of the D-Stinct range. With a very useable and versatile 75 mm side-cut this ski carves like a piste ski but can also give you a decent platform when there is some fresh snow or spring snow.

Very much like the excellent Tornado Ti from Salomon the D-Stinct is versatile enough for both advanced and expert skiers in most situations where you wouldn't or aren't able to use a specific ski for the job. In all an excellent all-terrain ski with decent amounts of grip and enough energy to amuse.

Citizen Ski rating: 85/100

Excellent all-mountain performer for advanced to recreational-expert skiers.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar D-Stinct Limited Skis 2008/09:

Dynastar Exclusive Legend Fluid Skis 2008/09

A great pair of "mid-fats" for the all-mountain female skier. With a predictable, responsive and tough sandwich construction you have a solid platform and excellent edge-grip throughout your turns. The 86 mm waist is adequate for most skiers, advanced or expert, in the majority of conditions in the back-country. Good levels of agility in couloirs, fine on piste and one of the best all-round skis for strong female skiers that you could buy.

Citizen Ski rating: 90/100

Whilst perhaps not the most "rad" ski out there this is one very versatile and useable all-mountain, freeride skis on the women specific market.

Dynastar Driver Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Driver Skis 2008/09

Entry level ski from Dynastar. Lots of sidecut for easy carving and skidding. Tame flex and heaps of forgiveness, especially in the tail, for a versatile beginner to intermediate package.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar Driver Skis 2008/09:

Dynastar Contact 10 Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Contact 10 Skis 2008/09

Raving about the Contact Groove leads me on to the Contact 10. A slightly more versatile and all-mountain ski with its 72 mm underfoot. If you are after an adept carver but would like some versatility, as you would with an SUV then perhaps the '10 is a fraction more robust in variable conditions.

The Groove is fantastic on groomed slopes, the '10 is not far behind but lacks the agility and bite of the former, whereas if you are going to venture off the side of the piste, nip down a small gully or are looking for a more playful ski then try the 10's out.

Citizen Ski rating: 88/100

Very good all-mountain skis for the advanced to expert skier. Very forgiving flex and generous side-cut mean you can carve and handle most situations in cruise control.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar Contact 10 Skis 2008/09:

The idea behind this piste performance range

Dynastar Exclusive Fluid Womens Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Exclusive Fluid Womens Skis 2008/09

As with the highly attractive Exclusive Fluid Limited, the Fluid is aimed at the upper levels of female skiers. Snappy performance, a slalom-esque side-cut and rapid edge-to-edge performance for the advanced skier are the aims.

A touch lighter than the Limited version the Fluid is great in shorter turns, possess the smooth, fluid feel of many Dynastar skis for many years and should prove popular - unless you don't go in for the very girly pink and white graphics!

An easy race-carver or slalom-carver for recreational advanced skiers, those of you very happy on reds and blacks but enjoy a nimble little ski with a bit of bite.

Citizen Ski rating: 85/100

Dynastar Contact Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Contact Skis 2008/09

Entry-model in Dynastar's executive "Contact" range. Very good "all-mountain" skis in the sense of any piste or groomed run can be approached with the Contact.

A fraction wider waist, 71 mm, gives an easier platform for intermediate skiers to skid and also challenge themselves to tougher groomed runs, European blacks and US Double-blacks.

Very easy to turn, either carving or skidding. Very forgiving flex and a versatile appeal with "executive" styling for an excellent package for the intermediate to advanced skier.

Dynastar Contact Groove Skis 2088/09

Dynastar Contact Groove Skis 2088/09

Hmmm, I love these skis!! Super-smooth and the side-cut just arcs buttery short to medium turns on any groomed run. Although not the most aggressive of skis the Groove is adept in the hands of an expert or advanced skier. An extra-wide tip chomps into firm snow for some snappy arcs and the extended "Full Drive Concept" gives you a stable, nimble and silken ride.

Advanced skiers will thoroughly enjoy the control, reassurance and the Groove's "zip" around the hill whilst experts will love the agility, useability and general all-round abilities of the new Groove.

Dynastar Omeglass World Cup Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Omeglass World Cup Skis 2008/09

Fabulous. Whilst the pure FIS-WC ski is known as a handful, the retail version, the Omeglass World Cup is an excellent performer. Even though the Omeglass hasn't appeared to change too much over the years the performance has always improved.

This newer model seems more direct than the outgoing Omeglass. As is the current trend the ski works stronger down the fall-line and allows the slalom skier to be more acute in their angles. Lightening quick from edge-to-edge and smooth with it, this is a ski for instructors or experts who love short, thigh-burning turns and precise, rock-solid edge control. The Omeglass WC does almost dance, float down the piste as opposed to many of the more Germanic models, which although they can feel more "planted" often also feel a little less agile and immovable. An excellent pair of skis.

Citizen Ski rating: 94/100

Great ski, not quite full-blown FIS version but a benchmark in the slalom class - am tired of those bloody graphics though.

Dynastar Exclusive Sensation Womens Skis 2008/09

Sexy, quick and ultra-smooth piste-carvers, the Exclusive Sensations are pretty and also pretty useful. With a 69 mm waist they are by no means super-model skiing but this ski can switch from edge-to-edge quicker than most. If you love agile skis, with lots of life and a supple, fluid feel then the Exclusive Sensations should appeal.

Turn-in is easy, the Autodrive plate gives good grip and the overall experience is very pleasant on groomed terrain. Not so much an all-mountain performer but if you love blue skies, great snow and a "Roadster" of a ski then try the Dynastar Sensation.

Dynastar D-Stinct Carbon Skis 2008/09

Dynastar D-Stinct Carbon Skis 2008/09

The D-Stinct range is true to the Dynastar heritage of refined fluidity. More than a mid-range ski this is the league of a Mercedes CLK, they are executive cruisers with a little sportiness, nicely balanced and very much at ease on groomed surfaces.

An expert skier can push the D-Stinct Carbon and see past the skis thresholds, yet this is not a ski for the skier to push boundaries, it is a ski for the red-run intermediate to expert skier to relax upon and revel in a refined ride.

In the mid-lengths, 165 and 172, you are rewarded with silken medium radius turns, the shorter lengths are very much aimed at shorter radii. I'd head for no shorter than 165 for a more generous all-round feel and smoother ride.

Dynastar Exclusive Pro Rider Skis 2008/09

Big skis for tough girls. The Exclusive Pro rider certainly fill a gap in the market, albeit a rapidly growing one, of female specific big mountain skis. The Pro Rider comes in with a large 100 mm waist and race-derived construction, they are built Dynastar's Chamonix valley factory. With such an ultra-strong construction edge-grip and durability are not going to be problem, weight and performance demands on the skier are more likely to be. This is no pansy of a ski, the Pro's are built for seriously good skiers to hound the back-country into submission with serious speed and tough lines.

Perfect for European or mixed-snow terrain and the steeps, the 100 mm waist gives great float but neither is it too large to hinder the expert skier. Perhaps in the 176 length they are getting long enough for competition length but they are probably best as an expert's or instructor/guides ski for a wide range of conditions and terrain.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar Exclusive Pro Rider Skis 2008/09:

Dynastar Speed Course WC FIS Skis 2008/09

Dynastar Speed Course WC FIS Skis 2008/09

Powerful, smooth and unforgiving. Those three words could be said about virtually any World Cup, or true-FIS certified race ski. Dynastars have graced the feet of some of the World's best skiers over time, J.P.Vidal won Gold in slalom and Aamodt is probably the greatest skier to have ever graced the snow.

Although no doubt exceptional, especially in the 182 and 187 lengths, the 190+ length and the slalom ski are renowned for their stiffness - they are incredibly stiff and tough. As with any ski of this level, and any skier considering using them testing is the only way forwards. If you enjoy your skis very stiff, relative to other race ski manufacturers, then you may love them - but test and feel first.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar Speed Course WC FIS Skis 2008/09:

Great looking pair of boards and refreshing to see under the lights at ISPO this year. The Huge Trouble, as one would expect, are fat, not obese or gargantuan but fat enough to give a high ride in powder, stomp landings in the back-country and spin with ambidextrous versatility.

Dynastar Speed Course Skis 2008/09

The Speed Course and Speed Skicross skis share identical construction and profiles for 2008 - they are also very close in structure to the Speed but the main difference here is that the tail is much more powerful. Although the profile of the tail doesn't change the additional strengthening enables the expert skier to use the tail to accelerate as the ski grips for longer in its arc.

As such for the advanced skier they are less versatile whereas for the expert the only difficulty in their use would be in tricky low-light or bumpy conditions - either way the fun you can have with these skis on a flat, well-groomed run outweighs any of the extra work you may rarely need to put in with that stronger tail.

If you prefer your graphics louder then grab a pair of the Skicross, or if you wish for a cooler, more race-bred feel grab the Speed Course; both are great for the expert skier wanting GS feel without the GS work-load.

With a 33m radius this is going to be one fast pair of skis, great for the expert, pro or team rider but not for the faint hearted or debutante. Dynastar have emphasised the pop on this latest model for higher kicks, smoother and more controlled landings plus that extra strength in the tail will give you a stronger ride just in general free-skiing.

Should be good, may have to wait a few months till I can get my hands on a pair though.

The manufacturer says this about the Dynastar, Skicross, Skis, 2008/09:

The Speed range is to skiing what Formula 1
is to auto racing. The skis in this range come straight from the
competition department and are equipped with all the latest
technological innovations, to provide expert skiers, instructors and

Dynastar, Speed, Skis, 2008/09

Dynastar, Speed, Skis, 2008/09

Aggressive, quick and fun race-carvers. The Speed has strong, over-sized shaping of the tip to swoop into medium or longer turns. It is a fun ski for the aggressive advanced skier or expert who doesn't desire the constraints of a pure racing ski but would like to enjoy the sensations of speed and ripping some serious arcs into the hard-pack.

A lively feel under-foot, good grip and a forgiving tail give the Speed enough clout to attack icy reds but enough forgiveness that in the hands of an advanced skier they are not going to feel overawed.

A great higher-speed race carver for fast medium to long arcs.

Blizzard Ski Reviews 2008/09 online @ Citizen Ski.

Blizzard Ski Reviews 2008/09 online @ Citizen Ski.

For 2008/09 Blizzard have a broad range of skis from raw FIS racers to a sexy, feminine Ltd Edition model Viva. Based in Austria Blizzard have been manufacturing skis since the end of the Second World War. Building strongly on the back of racing through the '70's Blizzard were hugely successful during the '80's. Skiing great Franz Klammer raced on Blizzard and through '84 and '85 they cleaned-up on some World Cup podiums with racing versions of their Thermo and, probably rally inspired, Quattro skis.

Always popular on the Austrian side of Europe's Alps Blizzard have retained success in racing throughout the '90's and into the new century. Their latest skis draw on this wealth of experience for some great all-mountain skis for any level of skier, plus a foray into the Park and freeriding with the awesome Zeus.

A bientot, Citizen Ski.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Ski Reviews 2008/09 online @ Citizen Ski.:

Blizzard Magnum 7.4 IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Magnum 74 IQ Skis 2008/09

Slightly narrower and lighter-weight sibling of the Magnum 76, here you have a more intermediate to advanced ski that is great on groomed runs, happy in the bumps and a nice all-rounder for the two to three week a year skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Magnum 74 IQ Skis 2008/09:

Based on the 7.6 also this all mountain model stands out with its Powerframe Technology, IQ System, and new sidewall construction. Excellent carving characteristics on groomers, versatility and outstanding back-country performance excel the Magnum 7.4 IQ.

Blizzard Magnum 76 IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Magnum 76 IQ Skis 2008/09

A great all-mountain ski, in the traditional sense, for the good intermediate to advanced skier - even experts, ski instructors can use this ski as a cruisy ski that will pretty much go anywhere at a reasonable rate of knots.

76 mm is versatile, the construction solid - perhaps more so than a few of Blizzards competitors - and the overall quality of the skis performance is very good. An excellent package for the recreational all-mountain skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Magnum 76 IQ Skis 2008/09:

The composition of the IQ system and the Powerframe Technology explain the outstanding versatility and rebound energy. A 7 mm waist carves even on the hardest snow and yet never sinks too deeply on soft groomers. The new sidewall construction gives stability at speed and is extremely forgiving.

Blizzard The Origin IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard The Origin IQ Skis 2008/09

To be tested.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard The Origin IQ Skis 2008/09:

Easiness, liveliness and agility are the origin of jibbing down the mountain and playful moves in the park. This Blizzard park model is specially equipped with a solid sandwich core construction and the IQ binding system to assure the best performance.

Blizzard Viva Limited Edition IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Viva Limited Edition IQ Skis 2008/09

A lively and lightweight carver aimed specifically at the style conscious lady. Agile, responsive and "nippy", the Viva Ltd.'s are best compared to a Roadster - sporty, fun, agile and feminine.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Viva Limited Edition IQ Skis 2008/09:

Fusing advanced materials makes the Viva Limited Edition phenomenally lightweight , yet its glamourous design is unparalleled amongst women's skis. This limited-edition model will persuade you with its dynamic performance, optimum flex, perfect edge grip and unbelievable versatility.

Blizzard Viva Magnum IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Viva Magnum IQ Skis 2008/09

Attractive and strong, the Viva Magnum prefers advanced women skiers who can drive a ski, power through variable terrain and want to attack the whole mountain. With a powerful sidewall construction the Viva Magnum is grippy and packs enough punch to push through the crud - they do possess some finesse though and they aren't a pair of heathens. The Viva is tailored to female skiing with specific placing of the bindings and a tuned core.

A good all-round package for the advanced to "recreational expert" skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Viva Magnum IQ Skis 2008/09:

An excellent performing multi-condition ski, the Viva Magnum IQ is built for the high-level female skier. The 76mm waist width makes this model exceptionally versatile in soft and hard snow. Blending women's specific technologies such as IQ System, sidewall construction and Powerframe Technology guarantees a powerful ski that performs brightly in all conditions.

Blizzard G-Force Supersonic IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard G-Force Supersonic IQ Skis 2008/09

True high-performance all-mountain carvers. If you used to enjoy a slalom ski but would prefer something with lots of life yet a bit more versatility then you'll love the G-Force Supersonic. With a powerful construction it will keep the high-powered and aggressive exec skier happy all-day long.

Great fun, great performance, a pair of Cayennes's for your feet!

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard G-Force Supersonic IQ Skis 2008/09:

The Supersonic is the kind of ski that makes you forget about all the products you've ever skied before. What a combo: the Powerframe technology combined with sidewall construction and IQ system are the guarantors of energy, quickness and stability - you don't need anything else. With the modulated sidecut, short and long turns are its forte. Great in all snow conditions, not just hard pack. It's awesome from edge-to-edge.

Blizzard Magnum 87 IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Magnum 87 IQ Skis 2008/09

With 87 mm underfoot the Magnum 87 is more of a blunder-buster than finely tuned arcer. Very much aimed at the expert skier the 87 prefers a strong touch and an aggressive skier atop. Strong and powerful the 87's blast through variable conditions and maintain a strong medium to long radius carve on groomed runs.

A fair "all-rounder" but not my favourite - I would actually prefer the agility and throw-ability of the 8.1 or just opt for a freeride ski from the Titan range like the versatile and much more attractive Cronus.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Magnum 87 IQ Skis 2008/09:

The remarkably versatile Magnum 8.7 IQ employs a construction originally reserved for race skis, added to a solid side-wall construction seamlessly merged with Blizzard's unique IQ system. The Powerframe technology stacks layers over each edge, and the development of the suspension control 3D allows the ski to flex smoothly in all new snow conditions. The result is unheard-of power and edge grip supported by the new IQ performance TT Binding.

Blizzard Magnum 8.1 IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Magnum 8.1 IQ Skis 2008/09

One down from the throne in Blizzard's Magnum range is the 8.1, is an all-mountain carver. It's scope is to satisfy advanced to expert skiers, with a blend of 50% groomed, 50% back-country performance - a modern day X-Scream if any of you can remember that far back!

So versatility, pretty good grip on firm, groomed runs and adequate floatation for knee deep powder with 81 mm underfoot. The Magnum is a solid-performer rather than a virtuoso one - they are good but not searing with any passion in any one field - but that is what makes the magnum 8.1 a great all-round mountain ski for the majority of recreational skiers looking for a one ski does it all job!

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Magnum 8.1 IQ Skis 2008/09:

Blizzard updates its line by incorporating its best construction throughout, and the Magnum 8.1 IQ is the latest to benefit. The Powerframe technology gives extra mass above the edges. The sidewall construction brings gripping power to these higher-end skis. Together with the IQ System, this blend results in incomparable versatility.

Blizzard G-Force Sonic IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard G-Force Sonic IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard's repost at Head's highly-successful Supershape range. The G-Force Sonic is a wily carver that you can arc to almost any dimension - the aim is versatility but also razor sharp performance for instructors, experts and very competent advanced skiers.

The first bunch, instructors, will love how they can shape, skid and carve their short turns - ideal for technical exams, whilst experts will love the versatility on all types of groomed runs, groomed or otherwise. I also think the Sonic would be good for many an advanced skier "stuck on a plateau", the drive and shape of ski such as the Sonic doesn't allow you to be passive - they demand input and also give you lots of output and feedback for it, so a great way to learn and improve.

There are no doubt more "all-mountain" inspired skis in the Blizzard range but the Sonic is a standout ski for the advanced to expert technical skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard G-Force Sonic IQ Skis 2008/09:

Like all Blizzard high-performance models, it features the IQ binding system, the high capacity Powerframe technology and the powerful sidewall construction. It distributes pressure evenly fore to aft, playing a key role in a solid ride, sweet and clean on the edge.

Blizzard GSR Magnesium IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard GSR Magnesium IQ Skis 2008/09

Not so much cruisers as destroyers. The GSR Mag's are powerful and bred to tear up boiler-plate reds and blacks. Great if conditions are smooth, you are feeling fit, strong and aggressive. This is a ski built for speed, with lots of drive but a fraction more useable than their red-blooded FIS-race cousins.

Ideal for the expert, perhaps as a second pair of skis - they are not overly versatile - great fun when the conditions are right and you have a good technical level of skiing and not too many crowds!

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard GSR Magnesium IQ Skis 2008/09:

High-end performance based on World Cup construction in combination with the IQ System and brand-new Powerframe technology. With excellent stability at high speeds, dynamic and precise power transmission and an unbelievable rebound off the edge.

Blizzard SLR Mg IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard SLR Mg IQ Skis 2008/09

If you're an expert skier but find a full-blown FIS slalom ski too much to handle - which most people do to be fair - then the SLR is your pick. All the grip, life and agility of a slalom ski but a little tamer flex, lots of bite but a fraction gentler and an all-round great package for shredding the ice.

Superb in short turns, good in medium length carves but fun pretty much everywhere - the side-wall construction and 13m radius (on average) tear into hard-pack, lighting up your legs and bringing a beam to your smile as they arc with grace, draw on your technique but never feel too Pit bull-ish to make you fearful.

A great slalom-carver for the advanced skier or expert.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard SLR Mg IQ Skis 2008/09:

A benchmark in terms of agility and edge hold for highly-athletic skiers. In comparison to the GSR - the SLR possesses more versatility. The outstanding new Powerframe technology provides enormous rebound and snappiness. The integrated IQ system ensures perfect flex and constant edge grip. High-strength magnesium layers guarantee stable skiing at high speeds.

Blizzard Reason IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Reason IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard have created a park and pipe focused ski with the reason that remains useable in an all-mountain situation. Again using their Sandwich construction the Reason is not only progressive and stable in the park and gives good pop off kickers but the 20 m radius and overall grip of the ski is highly useable outside the constraints of a manicured park.

Skiable from an advanced level up and ideal for most park and pipe aficionados.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Reason IQ Skis 2008/09:

Have you been searching for the perfect ski which attacks the pipes yet stays completely solid on kickers and on slopes? This Blizzard freestyle model give you enough reasons to end your quest. The IQ Inside Carbon technology has three mounting positions with inserts, high-resistant dual wood core and rock-solid side-walls - lean back and enjoy the show!

Blizzard Answer IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Answer IQ Skis 2008/09

Twin-tip back-country freeride huckers will love the Answer. A strong freeride to freestyle ski with its focus on the bowls, cliffs and back-country kickers the Answer has a large 105 mm platform - so if you can't float on that then go back to ski school - and a rock-solid Titanium-Sandwich construction for reliability and surefooted-ness in harsh conditions and with strong riders.

A ski very much aimed at the dedicated skier who rides throughout the winter - although I must admit I often find back-country twins slightly more fun and easier to ride than many of the more serious freeride skis.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Answer IQ Skis 2008/09:

Find the ultimate answer to your search between Freeride and Freestyle. The advanced technology of the IQ system integrates the binding deep within the ski body to create smooth and even flex for tricks, ambitious powder floatation and tremendous edge hold, with enough stiffness to boost your way through the crud.

Blizzard Titan Cronus IQ Skis 2008/09

Blizzard Titan Cronus IQ Skis 2008/09

With the Titan Cronus Blizzard have created a great all-mountain ski for the advanced to expert skier with scope for longevity and real-world skiing. If you want to ski occasionally on the groomed trails, with family, friends etc, but prefer the back-country, touring and virginal powder then the Cronus should be the first pair of skis you grab out of the Blizzard's bag.

With an 88 mm waist the ski is agile and nimble, stable yet supportive. A versatile slightly sub-20m radius sidecut keeps turns variable, you can switch from carve to skid, short to long turn. Built with a robust side-wall construction the Cronus also has a good deal of power and grip, but not too much to adversely affect the adventurous advanced skier.

Can be fitted with Marker's Duke binding for true touring capabilities - although slightly more expensive it would be my choice as it is a superb binding and versatile system.

The manufacturer says this about the Blizzard Titan Cronus IQ Skis 2008/09:

The Titan Cronus makes its way through the battle field guarded with a shield of 88 mm waist underfoot. This model of the Titan family stands out with a sublime blend of groomed, crud and deep-powder performance.
