Head Xenon Xi5.0 2008

Head Xenon Xi5.0 2008

The Xenon Xi5.0's are friendly all-round intermediate skis with a dash of technology from Head to make them smooth, light, agile and highly versatile. Very comfortable at low to medium speeds the Xenon 5's represent an good rapport of price and performance with a decent dash of sportiness.
As with all of the Xenon's they are adept intermediate all-mountain cruisers with super-light construction, ease of use and a big geometry to help you carve and stay on your feet. As is the case with tennis and squash racquets, woods and irons in golf, the more surface area you have available and the bigger the "sweet spot" is the easier they will be to use. Head use this principle with the Xenon range, a multi-function, easy to use ski from beginner level to advanced depending on which Xenon you choose.

The manufacturer says this about the Head Xenon Xi5.0 2008:

Maximum performance makes maximum enjoyment. This multi-condition Xenon takes you down the mountain like you never thought possible. Agile, smooth and sporty.

Head Xenon Xi3.0 2008

Head, Xenon, Xi3.0, 2008

Intermediate all-mountain cruisers with super-light construction, ease of use and big geometry to help you carve and stay on your feet. As is the case with tennis and quash racquets, golf drivers and putters, the more surface area you have available and the bigger the "sweet spot" the easier they will be to use. Head use the principle with the Xenon range, a multi-function, easy to use ski for the beginners and intermediates amongst you.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, Xenon, Xi3.0, 2008:

This is the ultimate knife for the bread and butter skier. The Xenon Xi 3.0 combines our new Xenon multi-conditions concept with some serious technology and unbeaten value.

Head Worldcup iSL 2008

Head, Worldcup, iSL, 2008

The ISl's are a slightly detuned version of a full-on race slalom ski- so great for advanced and expert skiers with no great desire to only shred gates. They are a great all-terrain slalom ski for the advanced to expert. If you have never skied on a pair of slalom skis before then they will probably take your breath away with their level of control- it is like trying to carve butter with a rolling pin and then switching to a heated razor blade. You surgically carve your route downwards, arcing and having a truly exhilarating time whilst the skis surge onwards gripping tenaciously.

For the advanced skier looking to improve their on-piste performance or the expert wanting a tamer more manageable pair of friends than a pair of racing thoroughbreds the iSL's will provide heaps of fun, excitement and versatility for the accurate skier.
Highly recommended.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, World cup, iSL, 2008:

Still the benchmark for agility and edge-hold for non-race orientated skiers. So quick in turns, you won't even remember you made one. Forgiving enough for intermediate skiers.

Head World Cup iGS RD RacePlate 2008

Head, WC, iGS, RD, RacePlate, 2008

Ooohh yeaahhh! This is a pair of skis. A "smaller" sibling than the full-on mens World Cup ski. The 188cm that I tried was a phenomenal ski and very quick. The ski isn't overly shaped, although with FIS this is no longer really possible, but the ski turns in very quickly and the acceleration is simply fantastic. The shaping and flex of the RD is at the pinnacle of recent race designs and they really urge you to push on with a blend of smoothness, power and finesse.
The RD's have great touch on the snow and instill lots of confidence that allows you to concentrate more on your line and not too much what is happening with your equipment.
Fantastic and highly recommended for experts and racers upto and including an 80 point or so FIS level.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, WC, iGS, RD, RacePlate, 2008:

The Michael Schumacher of skis. original, no compromise race gun, developed together with Bode Miller and the Head Racing Team. The new, super direct race plateand a new top sheet make this ski faster and more agile than ever before,, incredibly grippy and stable at high-speeds (meets new 2007 FIS regulations).

Head World Cup iSL RD RacePlate 2008

Head, WC, iSL, RD,RacePlate, 2008

Sublime. The new iSL RD is a completely reassuring, fast, subtle and smooth pair of slalom performers- they are fantastic and right up there with the best slalom skis available. The plate and top-sheet have been replaced for 2007 but the changes in how they ski amount to much more than what you'd imagine the sum of such change would effect. The new race plate allows more flex along the length of the ski whilst it seems less torsionally affected leaving you with crisp, clean arcs on the toughest of snows.
The white sheen finish is well executed and adds to an overall feeling of quality and along with the race tip fitted this pair of skis really do feel like the business.
I would have thought this is a great ski for the expert who likes to rip hard-core short turns on their days-off or for club racers wanting a tool from the sharp end of ski design.

A pair of stunners.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, WC, iSL, RD,RacePlate, 2008:

If the iGS RD feels like Formula 1, the iSL feels like a superbike. Developed with Bode Miller along FIS Slalom regulations this ski is agile and grippy like no slalom ski ever before. Made to boost your V-Max both in tight gates and in the store. (new race plate and top-sheet).

Movement Red Apple 74 2008

Movement, Red Apple 74 2008

The Red Apples are a medium-narrow touring ski that give you a few more millimetres over the Apple 71- so a slightly better ride is guaranteed when heading downhill rather than yomping uphill. If you are thinking of skiing more downhill, or cherish it a little more than a few extra grams over the 71, then I would definitely go for the 74 for heightened skiing pleasure.
Light, wood-cored, a touch firmer flex and Movement advise better suited to heavier skiers. The perfect ski for the Haut Route or other such serious touring undertakings- and they are still a pair of skis and not a couple of twigs with tiny boot clasps strapped to them.

The manufacturer says this about the Movement, Red Apple 74 2008:

Big brother of the Red Apple 71, 3mm wider, the Red Apple 74 offers a slightly more freeride approach. An evolutionary geometry and a progressive flex make it a ski perfectly adapted to heavier skiers and to those who want a wider ski to create more lift. Our most popular choice for more traditional ski touring.

Movement Spark 2008

Movement, Spark, 2008

The Spark fills a gap in the very advanced to expert Movement range- that of a versatile ski that is useable for the average advanced skier who skis a week or two per annum. With its 50/50 split of piste/freeride the Spark is wide enough to cruise through powder, carve on-piste plus they are narrow enough to hammer through the bumps.
As normal with Movement the core is made of wood, the stability is fantastic and thankfully the newer range of Movement skis are agile and fun to use. An excellent choice for the advanced skier looking for something a touch different.

The manufacturer says this about the Movement, Spark, 2008:

Our superlative all-rounder! This great ski is consistently one of the favourites in our line. The ski has developed over a long time with input from many sources. We consider it a mid-fat profile that is the type of ski that is changing the sport. It has a medium flex which makes it a forgiving ski that flatters the skier in all snow conditions and terrain. However, if the expert really wants to start charging, the Spark will respond without compromise. it is the definition of an advanced/experts allround ski.

Head Fine Thang 2008

Head, Fine, Thang, 2008

The Fine Thangs are real easy going intermediate skis for roaming around the greens, blues and trying your hand at the occaisional red run. They are carvey, light, easy to turn and reassuring. Their combination of low weight and agile sidecut make for a very easy pair of skis to ride and also they are efficient so not overly fatiguing- always a bonus!

The manufacturer says this about the Head, Fine, Thang, 2008:

A confidence builder for women who want effortless turns and a silky ride.

Head iXRC 800 2008

Head, iXRC, 800, 2008

Good-looking and well finished pair of advanced to expert piste carvers. They are smooth, carvy, forgiving, quite grippy and turn-in very well. They are a joy to use on fresh groomed runs, are pretty quick and good for the advanced skier looking to roam around the reds and blacks. Expertts and aggressive skiers will be better with the 1200 model but then you have a considerable hike in price. the iXRC 800 is a good-allround performer for the proficient advanced skier who likes to spend the majority of their time on the groomed side of the hill.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, iXRC, 800, 2008:

Our six-speed sequential sprts car for the kind of rider whi is usede to waiting for his frineds at the bottom of the lift.

Head iSupershape 2008

Head, iSupershape, 2008

The original Supershape with a little refreshment. This is a fantastic ski for the advanced to expert skier- speedier experts will prefer the very slalom-esque Speed variant. The ability to influence your turn shape on this ski iis amazing. I would highly recommend it for anyone doing an instructors course as they really do allow you to influence your turn and not be dictated to by the skis themselves.
Very useable in bumps, very positive on all types of snow as long as its not two feet deep and great fun over the entire hill. You'd struggle not to love them.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, iSupershape, 2008:

The legend behind the Supershape line: One of the most agressive sidecuts on the market. Favored by insiders (ski instructors, demonstrators and go-getters) across the planet. Preferred bumper sticke- "if the birds would fly this fast they'd loose their feathers".

Head iSupershape Magnum 2008

Head, iSupershape, Magnum, 2008

I am a huge fan of the Head Supershape range but the Magnum is perhaps my least favorite. It lacks the urgency of the other models, the fineness in shaping the of an arc. The Magnum is designed to be a slightly over-sized version of the Supershape- a bit like an over-sized tennis racquet getting a further over-sizing. I guess, it is a bit like a Big Mac- not that I would ever eat one of the wretched things- but does it, or do you, really gain much from the "super-sizing". I think more often than not the answer is going to be less than positive- unless high cholestrol and an early finish are your aims.
So with the Magnum it does turn in very nicely, and it does respond quite well on softer piste conditions but when you wind up the speed a little or the piste gets somewhat firmer then things tend to go a little Michael Moore, when what you really need is a firm wash-board core to hold things together.
Perhaps a very good ski for the aspiring intermediate and advanced skiers- good advanced skiers and experts should go for the exceptional iSupershape Speed or chip models.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, iSupershape, Magnum, 2008:

New!! Seeing how well the Supershape does with skiers everywhere around the world we realised we had to make it just a little bit more versatile. The iSupershape Magnum comes with a waist of 71mm (instead of the "classics" 66mm) making it the perfect piece to push your V-Max in any terrain.

Head Xenon Xi7.0 2008

Head, Xenon, Xi7.0, 2008

An excellent mid-range all-terrain ski the head Xenon has a highly versatile mix of an aggressive sidecut, a wide and light body and an easy to flex construction for the sporty intermediate with an eye to skiing the entire hill given half the chance and the kit to do it with. A very good all-round intermediate package.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, Xenon, Xi7.0, 2008:

New!!, The Xenon Xi 7.0 combines the Xenon shape and Aircoat performance at an extremely competitive price point. Ready to experience what skiing will be about next year?

Head iXRC 1200 2008

Head, iXRC, 1200, 2008

I always look forwards and generally am not disappointed by the ride that Head's 1200 provides on a yearly basis. The 1200 although not the most exclusive model in the XRC range tends to be the sportiest and is great at mid-to-long radius turns on firm pistes although for 2007/8 there is the Chip midel that is nigh on identical to top the range. The sandwich construction derived from the race skis always gives the 1200 impeccable manners and touch the snow. A little less active a ski than the Chip edition but nonetheless a great advanced to expert package for high-speed silky smooth piste skiing.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, iXRC, 1200, 2008:

Acceleration and handling to make your metabolism peak. The 2007 + XRC 1200 was made for expert skiers ready to challenge both the mountain and their own personal limits every time they get off the lift.

Head Xenon Xi9.0 2008

Head, Xenon, Xi9.0,2008

Light, wide and very versatile. The new Xenon Xi 9.0 brings a new dimension to Head's ski range. They are very, very light which helps with agility, fatigue and ease-of-use plus they have a radical sidecut to help you carve turns no matter what the snow conditions. They are an interesting pair of skis and quite easy for the advanced skier to ski in pretty much any condition- they are good but not thrilling and I guess that is the issue. As with most things, if you make them pretty good in the majority of situations they can be a little dull at times whereas a ski that is built to specialise often thrills at its given task. So with the Xenon''s you get very capable performers and great skis for the majority but as with the majority of cars they are not overly riveting but get the job done. The Xenon's do the job.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, Xenon, Xi9.0,2008:

New!! The Xi 9.0 is the widest , lightest and most radically tailored model in our all-new multi-condition Xenon line. Wide but with a truly radical sidecut. Light but agile and stable. Quick on pack and smooth in slush and crud. A true multifunction revolution for the masses!

Head iXRC 500 2008

Head, iXRC, 500, 2008

Sporty, on-piste carve orientated ski that really dives into the turns and grips and holds onto firm snow conditions. The iXRC 500 is great in the hands of an intermediate and a good budget choce for the advanced skier. They are very much happiest on groomed runs yet are veratile enough and not too precise that they are difficult in bumps or when you get a dump of fresh powder on the piste. Good allround piste performance.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, iXRC, 500, 2008:

Drivers wanted: Extremely versatile sportster for riders who are looking to get more speed out of every turn.

Head iXRC 300 2008

Head, iXRC, 300, 2008

The XRC 300 is Head's entry model into their performance piste range. The XRC's are defined by their carving abilities and grip on firm groomed snow.
The 300 is a tame version though and a very easy ski to live with. Beginners can use this ski to start on and intermediates will enjoy its stability, ease of turn and a sidecut (the skis shape) that allows it to to carve and grip effectively into firmer snow.
The only downside to the shape is that you can get caught making the same shape turn all the time and people can become "locked in" to making just the one turn over the whole mountain.
The 300 is a sporty option and if you want to improve your skiing and drive yourself to "pick it up" quickly then the iXRC 300 is a good starting point.

The manufacturer says this about the Head, iXRC, 300, 2008:

Extremely versatile ski for ambitious allmountain riders, with plenty of performance to spare.

Atomic Hot Minx 2008

Atomic, Hot Minx, 2008

The Hot Minx sports a narrow sidecut for racier, slicker and sharper short to medium radius turns. If you would like an agile, zippy, fun and dynamic pair of inermediate to advanced piste skis then the Hot Minx would be your choice out the Atomic Balanze range.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Hot Minx, 2008:

racy, curious, playful. The Hot Minx guarantees uncomplicated carving with lots of fun- for active independent female skiers.

Atomic Nomad High Noon 2008

Atomic, Nomad, High Noon, 2008

Mid-range in the progressive and highly-versatile Nomad range. The good thing about the Nomad's are the price/performance ratio. This is a great pair of skis with a good carving feel, they are light, easy to use, fun, grippy and they are relatively inexpensive. The only downside to them is their rather "tinny" feel at times, especially when the speed rises but if this is an issue to you then there are lots of other allmountain skis in the Atomic range that can do a great job but will just hurt the pocket a little more.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Nomad, High Noon, 2008:

Extremely light, versatile ski with optimal performance characteristics on all terrain and on every type of snow. With four TFC sensors in the tip and two on the tail and Nano reinforcement between the sectors this ski is dynamic, torsion proof and easy to ride.

Atomic Punx 2008

Atomic, Punx, 2008

(Base view) As you can see the base of the top-line freestyle model the Punx has some serious reinforcement along the centre of the ski for lots of grinding action. With a new kinetic core and livelier feel the Punx is happy hitting kickers in the park or backcountry. With 82mm underfoot they are adept to ski in the pwder, stomp landings on the manicured slopes of the pipe or in the deep neyond the boundaries.
Pure freestyler happiest in the hands of the experienced rider who thinks the groomed runs are a bother.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Punx, 2008:

The Punx was added as a pure twin-tip ski with top design features, kinetic core construction and reail slide reinforcement light to match the desires of a core orientated freeskier. From rails to park spins, to backcountry kicker session...Punx can do it all.

Atmoic Metron B10ppl 2008

Atmoic, Metron, B10, 2008

Sporty, versatile , agile and a great allround ski for advanced skiers who want to buy one ski that they can anywhere with. Not as smooth or refined as the B5i and not as agressive as the B5c the 10 has lots to offer the fast advanced skier who likes to hack around the entire hill from 9am tiill the lifts shut. A real go anywhere performer in virtually all conditions.

The manufacturer says this about the Atmoic, Metron, B10, 2008:

Genuine all-mountain carver with titanium pulsers. For lovers of carved turns on groomed slopes who are always open for a pleasurable excursion off-piste.

Atomic Metron 5 2008

Atomic, Metron, 5, 2008

Entry-level Metron ski that aims to develop your all-mountain capabilities in a ski packed with innovation and help for the intermediate on a plateau who wants a ski to help him become more adventurous. The Metron 5 is very easy to ski and with its combination of a 72mm platform and an almost-slalom like sidecut you can't help but start to feel a carve. The ample width will help you feel more confident with its stability a given and you will also feel that you no longer feel on a knife edge in deeper snow due to that extra few mills underfoot.
So a nice intermediate ski with not many minuses and lots of positives for the developing intermediate skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Metron, 5, 2008:

The most recent addition to the Metron family. A real pleasure both in terms of its technology and design. Thanks to its wide body geometry and balanced sidecut, this ski is easy to ride in both long and short radii. Unlimited fun on all terrain!

Atomic Metron 11 B5c 2008

Atomic, Metron, 11, B5c, 2008

A new and faster more aggressive addition to the Metron range. With its slalom sidecut, width underfoot and stiffer racier flex this ski can really hound the hill. They give lots of bite into firm groomed snow and offer almost race-like grip in short to medium turns yet they are smooth, agile easier to control than a race ski and still have enough around the belly to let you take them into the backcountry playground. As an expert skier I prefered this model out of the Metron range as they allow you and urge you to throw them around and be more attacking.
If you are looking for a cruisier more refined experience then go for the range topping B5i but if you prefer your thrills more visceral then try the 11 B5c.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Metron, 11, B5c, 2008:

Brand new and extremely racy ski with innovative Beta 5 connected technology. For an optimal distribution of power, excellent edge grip, dynamism and fun on all terrain. On and off groomed slopes!

Atomic Metron 9 ppm 2008

Atomic, Metron, 9 ppm

Versatile and excellent mid-range Metron. This ski makes more sense to me than the B5i as it will help develop the advanced intermediate skier into a skier who can rip around the off-piste and variable conditions with confidence brought about with the over-sized sidecut and mid-fat dimensions of the Metron 9.
Great for the advanced skier who fancies a little ski technology to help them conquer tricky terrain but still wants a one ski does it all package that can tear around on the red and black runs.
The 9ppm is smooth, not quite as smooth or as well dampned as the B5 models but they do make for a fun pair of agile, carvey allmountain skis.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Metron, 9 ppm:

Lightweight, multi-variable ski with Beta-pulsers for comfortable turning and control on all-terrain.

Atomic Metron B5i 2008

Atomic, Metron, B5i, 2008

Top-of-the-line B5i construction for the ultimate Metron. Atomic packs in the technology and radical desing into the Metron range and the B5i has it all. Very curvaceous with a 131-76-115mm sidecut gives the expert skier dimensions in a ski only see in Pamela Anderson in a person. They are versatile but they are a handful and take some getting used to- not least for your pocket becasue this ain't a cheap pair of skis.
The ride is smooth although the B5 pistons can be felt flexing when you push hard and it is not a natural material flex but one that is like that of a mountain bike where you would like to tailor the flex to suit you wieght and ability- maybe thats something they will introduce in the future. If you like a radical carver but also like to hit the backcountry then you will probably enjoy the Metron B5, for me I enjoy trying them once a year to sdee how the concept has progresswed- and they have since the original heavy-weight models, but I am not sure how much I would want a pair as my dedicated daily ski- perhaps the slightly more aggressive and longer turning 11 B5c would be better suited.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Metron, B5i, 2008:

The all-rounder for the ultimate in skiing enjoyment and high-speed carves. For all snow-conditions and every terrain. With proven B5 techonolgy and its Power Channels which function like shock absorbers in a car or suspension forks in a bike.

Atomic Royal Minx 2008

Atomic, Royal Minx, 2008

The Royal Minx''s are good-looking allterrain skis for the advanced female skier. With 72mm underfoot you can skip off the side of the pistes and play around in softer snow without them catching and the Royal's also have enough sidecut to carve and give good sensation on-piste when you get the speed up and start to create some angles.
A great allround skier for the advanced intermediate upwards who is looking for a good allmountain ski with an err to carved turns and a smooth ride.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Royal Minx, 2008:

Short curves or long turns. There are no limits to the creativity and ability of an athletic woman skier with the Royal Minx. The special Nano-technology ski construction offers the desired comfort on the piste but is also resilient in all other types of terrain.

Atomic Sweet Daddy 2008

Atomic, Sweet Daddy, 2008

Lighter construction and more approachable graphics should see the Sweet Daddy's gaining in popularity for 2008. The ski is a mid-sized, 80 mm underfoot allmountain Freeride ski. This is a great ski if youhave not skied much off piste before and want a ski that is going to help you find your feet and some feeling for un-groomed terrain. The 21m radius is quite long so don't expect a great carve out of them on the piste but you can rotate them and get them to skid easily off piste which is good for speed control on steeper descents.
An excellent allround freeride ski for the adveturous advanced skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Sweet Daddy, 2008:

All-mountain model for perfect flotation in powder, fast carves and an accomplished performer over the moguls.

Atomic Sugar Mama 2008

Atomic, Sugar Mama, 2008

New for 2008 is the allterrain Sugar Mama. A sort of Range Rover for the mountain the Sugar Mama is a versatile all-mountain performer- comfortable on-road and proficient off it.
Based around the very adept Nomad unisex allmountain range the Sugar Mama's will prove a great pair of allterrain skis for the advanced skier. Intermediate skiers will need to develop into them and make sure they don't go too long in the length to keep them manageable whilst experts who want a cruisier ride will enjoy them but may prefer a slightly sportier freeride ski.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Sugar Mama, 2008:

Very light, high-quality, all-mountain ski with a 79mm sidecut. With six TFC sectors in the tip and four in the tail of the ski. For female ski nomads who want to enjoy every single moment on all types of terrain.

Atomic Sugar Daddy 2008

Atomic, Sugar Daddy, 2008

Atomic have introduced some lighter constructions into their Daddy range for 2007 and this really helps lighter skiers or those with less fitness to enjoy a more agile and fun experience without battling to get their skis to turn. The Sugar Daddy's are proof of this with their B4 construction and light weight, you have the stability and feel for the snow from the B4 construction but also the ability to throw the ski around (a little) with the weight reduction. If you are going fast enough then a ski with 99mm underfoot can feel agile but if you are a confirmed potterer then you will find a ski of these dimensions a little tough going. Keep the speed up, the slopes steep and the powder deep and the Sugar daddy's will reward you with great floatation, stability and speed in the backcountry, keep the speed low and you'll wish you had gone to the gym a little more.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Sugar Daddy, 2008:

Ultra-light powder ski in B4 construction with a 99mm sidecut and impressive performance characteristics on all types of terrain.

Atomic Snoop Daddy 2008

Atomic, Snoop Daddy, 2008

Getting bigger but still versatile enough to use on an every-day basis the Snoop Daddies are probably the most versatile ski in the Daddy range for the advanced to expert skier. Withh 88mm underfoot they have plenty of girth to hammer down the crud and flow through the powder yet the stiffer flex and 22m radius will give you some pretty high-speed turns whether you're on-piste heading to the backcountry or you're lucky enough to have a big open face of virgin snow to shred.
Versatility in Freeride for the expert skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Snoop Daddy, 2008:

Freeride or all-mountain? The new light-weight Snoop Daddy couldn't care less.
With its 88mm sidecut it does not go under in deep snow and doesn't get left behind so easily even in fast turns.

Atomic Pimp 2008

Atomic, Pimp, 2008

With its new construction, the Pimp has a slanted sidewall construction and new core, this 2008 version should be livelier and lighter than the Pimp of old. You have 100mm+ underfoot for your backcountry forays and floatation in powder shouldn't be an issue and you certainly have the platform for landing pretty big stomps.
As the flagship backcountry freestyle model the Pimp can do it all- either high-speed freeride or huge spinning hucks all depending on what your willing to throw yourself of or into.
The Pimp's are very much the experts choice in the Atomic range for a versatile freestyle/ride ski- the Thug is also in sights but perhaps a little too huge to be as much fun.Girls specific freestyle skisjsjs

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Pimp, 2008:

Pimp says it all. With its new slanted sidewall sandwich construction and kinetic core the Pimp is the ideal equipment for kickers and powder. With its new construction whatever you put into this ski you'll get out of it.

Atomic Slim Daddy 2008

Atomic, Slim Daddy, 2008

The Slim Daddy's are new to the Daddy range for 2007. This is the entry model and is aimed towards the adventurous advanced intermediate skier who fancies trying his hand in the powder. As a skier at this level is going to still spend the majority of his time on groomed runs then the ski also has to ski well on firmer snow and the Slim Daddy does this by having a profile that is slightly on the slimmer side of a mid-fat ski- so less than 80mm underfoot. With the Slim Daddy you get more floatation than with a traditional allterrain ski so it is easier to use in deeper conditions but the 76mm underfoot still allows you to glide and carve on the groomers- and with a medium to longer radius sidecut the Slim Daddy's are going to bequite fast, fair to handle in the bumps and a good allterrain ski for the skier who gets to the snow a couple of times a year.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, Slim Daddy, 2008:

The new, ideal Daddy for newcomers to powder. An easy-to-ride all-mountain ski for powder pleasure and fast turns on groomed runs.

Atomic Sativa 2008

Atomic,Sativa, 2008

Economically priced and adept allmountain intermediate performers. The Sativa's would make an ideal first pair of skis, they are light, versatile, easy to use and yet still provide good grip and carve on groomed snow. The 72mm underfoot gives you some stability and the sidecut at 16.5m is great for just cruising around and trying to develop feel for your skis and the confidence to try new slopes and higher speeds.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic,Sativa, 2008:

Our Nomad entry model for all-mountain riders. Very light, highly versatile, good natured and lively to ride.

Atomic She Devil 2008

Atomic, She Devil, 2008

Girls specific freestylers. With all the main features of the Punx but with a few tweaks for the girls. Slightly lighter construction and flex make them more agile in female hands and better suited to lighter weights. The graphics are quite clean and do have appeal without being too girly and the She Devil has all the abilities to be an excellent freestyle to allround mountain ski for the advanced to expert skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Atomic, She Devil, 2008:

This woodcore sandwich sidewall ski was designed for devilishly cool girls that want to hang out with the extremely wild boys...and at the same time have the ability to pull off the same tricks thanks to the killa equipment.

One model along from the top-end Aero X the new GT + has a slightly softer construction and tighter turn radius to give you the same smooth carves and transitions from carving to skidding as the Aero X but all is a touch tamer. The GT + is a fantastic on-piste carver though and probably better suited to most advanced skier who prefer the comfort of shorter and medium sized turns to faster more open arcs.
Excellent for the executive skier looking for comfort, control, a dab of speed and a sprig of agility- the Aero GT+ can do it all discreetly and with haste.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Aero GT + 2008:

Radical carving challenge- Full control.

With radical energy transmission and technological assistance, your vision of carving will be altered. you will quickly master any terrain with stability and solidity at any speed thanks to the Hybrid technology. The most demanding carvers will be thrilled!

Salomon Gun 2008

Salomon Gun 2008

Re-worked from its big brother the LAB 188 Gun, the new Salomon Gun's for 2008 are a breath of fresh air for the name they inherit. Still twin-tipped but with a total change of construction and shape the new ski is much more versatile, fun and springy. They instill you a passion to drive faster, spin higher and to take some risks. The Gun's are a great pair of skis for young, aggressive and expert skiers who are looking to emulate and one day surpass their heros.

All the dimensions are there for an excellent freeride ski and the new flex is better balanced, easier yet more stable. Advanced to expert skiers will love them in varied backcountry terrain whilst the freestylers who are getting bored of just hanging out in the park will find they can pull even bigger airs in the backcountry with the new Gun.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Gun 2008:

Symbol of the new freestyle culture.
The ultimate weapon for backcountry warriors, the Teneighty Gun is fast and manoeuvrable. You can jump cliffs and land in deep powder with ease with this rock solid ski. If youa re all about living the extreme take a Gun with you.

Salomon Scarlet 2008

Salomon Scarlet 2008

Freeride for women, the Scarlet looks fantastic this year- which is always a good start as it subconsciously inspires you to enjoy your skis and skiing. Based around the Gun the Scarlet has got enough girth to battle down any crud or profound silky powder if you are fortunate enough to have such conditions.
With 96mm underfoot you have the float and the construction and feel of the skis on snow is surprisingly solid- to the extent that you do need to drive up the knots before the Scarlets start to respond.
Althought they are manufactured with an Isocell foam core they are surprisingly tough skis and you can really hammer down the slopes on them- there is a lack of feel though and they are not the smoothest of skis although they are stable.
In conclusion, a very good pair of freeride skis for the majority of advance and expert girls but if you are looking for a ski with a subtlety and a deft touch for the snow and terrain then maybe look elsewhere- but a great pair of freeride to big mountain skis given the right conditions.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Scarlet 2008:

take on the mountain with your feminine flare.

Collect some more unpaid speeding tickets taking on deep powder witht his fat yet light and manoeuvrable ski. The wide waist will let you rock the whole mountain. The ultra feminine graphics with a hint of sparkle reveal who you are and what you are about....

Salomon Aero X 2008

Salomon Aero X 2008

I loved this ski when I tried it back in January. There was a broad mix of conditions from fresh, light snow from the previous night to firm (very!) hard pack from the snow cannons that were blasting away.
The Aero X was the first and the best of the Aero models that I tried. The Hybrid construction was really noticeable with a definite difference between what was going on from your toe side to your heel side.
From under the middle of your feet and forwards the weave of the construction if different, a point highlighted in the "windows" that feature on the Aero skis that allow you to view the construction. This stronger weave really lets you carve and be aggressive with the front whilst the back still hold son well and gives lots of grip. But if you stand a little or back off then you can pivot the tail around at will and wash off some speed- they are great fun nd also a little safer as you don't need as much space to "run out" if you are going like the clappers.
In all the Aero X's are like a Mercedes CL car, understated, refined, fast yet safe.
An excellent pair of skis for fast advanced skier or expert who prefers to cruise rather than tear about the mountain.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Aero X 2008:

Maximum performance.

With the DNA of a racing ski modified to add technical assistance, every extreme turn becomes intuitive; you can unleash the power yet remain in complete control. Performance carving takes on a new dimension with the Aero X thanks to the Hybrid technology and Multiradius construction.

Salomon Aero S 2008

Salomon Aero S 2008

The entry model into the Aero range the "S" should prove very popular with intermediate skiers with aspirations to carve faster and harder on the blues, reds and eventually the blacks. The S is a sporty ski with all the benefits of the Aero-family construction that enables you to engage the tip of the ski to carve yet skid out the tail if things need taming down a little. This ability to skid is also a great feature on icier slopes where you don't want to hurtle down the fall-line and be skiing faster than the average Highway Patrol Agency driver can manage to drive.
A lower price point means this ski is also a lot more accessible than the top-of the-line X and GT models. A great first pair of piste carvers for sporty intermediate men.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Aero S 2008:

Experience carving.

Feel your first sensations of carving control in all types of turns. The full-on Hybrid technology provides stability and security. This full option ski will let you discover sliding and carving on-piste.

Salomon Jewel Topaz 2008

Salomon Jewel Topaz 2008

The topaz sits in the middle of the Jewel range for ladies. Salomon's Topaz is aimed at the adventurous intermediate to advanced skier. The sidecut wil let you carve on the groomers but the width underfoot, 72mm, is great for stability and also some floatation if you find yourself in slightly deeper snow.
With a light construction, feminine graphic and forward mounting point to go with that carvy radius you will have no problems steering the Topaz's around any bumps or lumps in terrain and they should prove an adept little pair of all-mountain skis.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Jewel Topaz 2008:

Highly versatile performance.

With Jewel Topaz, you can make your own plans. No need to check out the conditions because you will be ready for everything. Highly versatile with a wide chassis, from groomed runs to powder, you can take it all on! With fresh, feminine graphics you will be ready for an adventure!

Salomon Equipe 3V Race 2008

Salomon Equipe 3V Race 2008

One of my choice skis for everyday teaching and cruising about the Alps. The 3V's have been around in various guises for many a moon now but they are great for a versatile short to medium radius ski that can hack through virtually all conditions and they are also great fun in bumps for the experienced skier.
As a pure slalom ski you are better spending a touch more and going for the LAB 3V which is a pure race beast but the 3V standard is a much better allround propostion- plus you can ski on them allday long without too much in the way of leg burn if you really want to take it easy.
The sidecut and plate of this latest incarnation provide effortless carves in either tight or more open turns, the flex is lively but not too demanding and they arean excellent choice for advanced to expert skiers- my girlfriend loved them in the 160cm version and was really pleased with the increase in control and agility over her regular intermediate skis- she has only skied a season so they are definitely not only for racers!

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Equipe 3V Race 2008:

THE perfect ski for top SL performance.

Straight from our racing department, here is the ski to take you to the podiums if you have the skills and dedication. Completely re-worked with our latest technologies, you too can reach the summit of the podiums.

Salomon Equipe SC Race 2008

Salomon Equipe SC Race 2008

Light, nimble and lightening quick. The Equipe SC's are toned down slalom skis that rip around the pistes leaving you exhilirated with angles and G forces. They are not the stiffest or toughest skis in the range but for advanced skiers who want their first taste of what it is like to lay down a slalom carve then they are great fun- and if you're an expert then you will enjoy the SC''s for their ease of use, their agility and the fun that you can have with them when one of the latest generation of slalom skis would get a touch tricky.

Excellent for those wishing to tear up short to medium turns on the groomed runs.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Equipe SC Race 2008:

Carving performance and versatility.

Carve and slice on piste with ease with quick edge to edge transitions that let you experience the sensations to the best. Push your carving limits at speeds you never thought possible!

Salomon SPK 2008

Salomon SPK 2008

Pure park and pipe performance from the SPK. The nose and tail are softened, the mid-section reinforced for grinding and stomping whilst the edges are reinforced along the entire length of the ski for longevity.
If cruising and spinning around the Park is your thing then you will love the SPK's and they are sure to prove popular amongst the aficianados but for mere mortals like myself who can just about manage a 360 then perhaps I'd be better with something more versatile.
Park perfectionists.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon SPK 2008:

The Comp Destroyer.

Stiff in the middle to help you nail those rails yet super flexi at the tip and tail to throw you out of the pipe. This ski will help you throw down the best tricks, even ones you thought impossible.

Salomon Instinct Charm 2008

Salomon Instinct Charm 2008

The Instinct Charm is the first ski in the ladies Instinct range. Aimed at the beginner to intermediate the Charms will inspire you to carve and turn with confidence. They are lovely and smooth on the snow, easy to use, turn on a dime and will be great for tackling greens, blues and eventually reds.
The light construction is efficient and won't tire you when skiing or carrying them but this will mean that for more advanced skiers they will require a more stable ski for higher speeds and tougher conditions.
An excellent starter pair of skis....for the ladies.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Instinct Charm 2008:

Control the slopes and show off your curves.

Ladies, you can experience your first thrills of carving with the Instinct Charm., a ski made just for you. You can turn with ease, taking your abilities to the next level with smooth speed control and grip on hard snow...

Salomon Rocker BC 2008

Salomon Rocker BC 2008

Destined to be the ultimate Salomon Freeride/Freestyle backcountry weapoms for the latest generations of extreme thrill and spin seekers.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Rocker BC 2008:

Salomon Aero GT 2008

Salomon Aero GT 2008

Salomon's new Aero range seems them return to making very useable skis for the entire mountain. With this the mid-range Aero GT you can cruise at speed, potter with young kids or old grinches and generally do whatever you wish ona pair of skis.
Sporty intermediate to advanced skiers will love them, they are smooth, relatively undemanding and so easy to control. The new construction developed by Salomon for the Aero's enables you to switch between an aggressive carve and a smooth skid at will- something not traditionally witnessed in the carving ski generation.
Light, agile, strong when you want them to be and stable at moderatly quick pace the Aero GT's are tough to beat as an advanced allmountain caver.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon Aero GT 2008:

Control you carving with confidence.

Challenge your carvingexpectations with this powerful,, stable and responsive ski. You will enjoy high speeds with hybrid technological assitance that helps you master all conditions and all terrains. Carving takes on control.

Salomon Thruster 2008

Salomon, Thruster, 2008, Freestyle, Advanced, Expert, Skis

The Thruster for this 2008 gets a very cool graphic courtesy of the UK's own Jamie Strachan and they do look fantastic. The ski remains the same, they are a great allround mountain ski and you can take them absolutely anywhere. They may not be the best in any one particular department on the hill but they are probably the best allround and fun ski money can buy.
With the twin-tip they are easy for even intermediate skiers to ski, the revised core from last year helps maintain stability and liveliness for more advanced and expert skiers when travelling at speed plus they rip through bumps and have plenty of pop for the park and pipe.
If you are looking for a twin tip that does it all, freestyle, some freeride, hackin' and jibbin around the pistes then this a sweet pair of boards.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon, Thruster, 2008, Freestyle, Advanced, Expert, Skis:

Stomp tricks like never before.

With all our latest technologies, get ready to stomp tricks like never before with better rail contact and smoother landings. Still based around the original legend first ever New School freestyle ski 1080.
The whacked out design reflects Jamie Strachan's view of freestyle: spontaneous and expressive.

Salomon X Wing 10 2008

Salomon, X Wing 10, 2008, Allround, Advanced, Expert, skis

The intermediate to advanced skiers dream allmountain ski. Light, well shaped and easy to use. The X-Wing 10's are very good onpiste and perform apt arcs and will give you lots of feedback in virtually all conditions. Advanced skiers with a desire to explore will enjoy the width underfoot and the light core with its titanium layer providing the agility.
With an err towards short and medium turns the X-Wing flies through all the mountain has to offer and isn't half bad in the bumps. For the expert I would head towards the X-Wing Tornado with its woodcore and added stability.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon, X Wing 10, 2008, Allround, Advanced, Expert, skis:

Accept the mountain challenge. Go for it. This all-terrain ski with oversized sidecuts will let you carve piste and off piste terrain. Perfect edge grip yet manouevrable and light, the X-Wing 10 has no limits!

Salomon Tornado 2008

Salomon, Tornado, 2008, Advanced, Expert, Freeride, Allterrain, skis

The Tornado is now in its second year and is the natural successor to the original X-Scream. Extremely versatile on or off the groomed trails the Tornado has a very malleable sidecut that enables you to arc any shape of turn you wish in almost all European ski conditions. Perhaps not possessing quite enough girth for regular powder skiing the Tornado is a great tool for ski instructors or advanced to expert skiers who ski the full length of a day and encounter everything from ice to powder to slush within a days skiing.

The manufacturer says this about the Salomon, Tornado, 2008, Advanced, Expert, Freeride, Allterrain, skis:

The best ski for the whole mountain.

The XW Tornado's wide chassis and overshaped sidecuts make powder days even more exciting. Fly back through the country with ease.

British Junior Champion Louise Thomas attains full British Ski Team status.

Louise Thomas Val Thorens 2007

Louise Thomas, British Junior Champion, British Senior Team, Val Thorens, FIS Race, Giant Slalom, Louise Thomas is a nineteen year old skiing sensation from a part of the UK more associated with racing on horseback rather than down the vertiginous spine of an Alp.

Hailing from south of London Louise competed in her first full-time season last year and achieved remarkable results for someone who had not trained or raced on-snow from a young age.

Just prior to the GB National Championships Lou raced in the French Senior Championships where she placed an incredible 13th down the perilous Face de Bellevarde from a start number of 57. This is on the infamous slope that was the scene of the mens downhill during the Albertville Olympics were the US team pulled out because they thought it too risky.

At the GB Junior races Louise proved her class with resounding wins across the board to take home four gold medals then the following week she again proved her mettle with excellent performances in Meribel at the British Senior races. Here she placed third senior overall and was 3rd in GS, 4th in SL and 3rd in SG- not bad for someone who had only managed just over a month on-snow the previous year. Good work and rewarded with full British Team status this summer.

2007/8 promises to be a great season for Louise and one that starts with training this weekend on the Pissailes glacier in Val d'Isere, France and to be followed by camps in Saas Fee and south America with the British team.

Salomon GB are pleased to be partnering Louise on her goals to achieve World Cups and Olympics, along with Leki and Cebe, to see Lou succeed in the beckoning Europa Cups of this coming season. Lets hope all the training and hard work will create success for the British Team and eventually raise Louise's profile over the years to come as one the leading girls in skiing's "White Circus".

Faction 168 Dillinger 2008

Faction 168 Dillinger 2008

Re-worked from last year the Dillinger comes in a 168cm length and should see a mix of riders from both sexes. The 92 mm underfoot is identical to that of the Wednesdayand provides an excellent platform for your freeriding or park stomping.
Faction are making skis that cross-over the boundaries of Freestyle and freeride and the Dillinger is at the forefront off this edge so you can rip around the entire hill without reverting to different skis everytime you want to ski differing terrain.

The manufacturer says this about the Faction 168 Dillinger 2008:

For 2007/8 we’ve increased the lengths of the Dillinger and Wednesdays to 168 and 178cm respectively, and made them both 92mm in the waist and tweaked the flexes – making them ideal for hucking in the park and backcountry, as well as for ripping up the pow.

168cm – “Dillinger”:
Tip/waist/tail (mm): 122/92/112
Tip & tail height (mm): 52/47
